Gourmet Cooking With a Crock-Pot

Often, when considering cooking dinner with a Crockpot, people may automatically think of soups, stews, a pot roast or chicken pieces. However, with a little creativity and a spice rack some delicious, impressive foods can be the result.

Slightly altering recipes from a variety of cookbooks and sources, Crockpot cooking need not be mundane. If you are leaning towards a recipe that calls for slow roasting in the oven, use the Crockpot instead!

One of the main reasons for not using the Crockpot with more creative recipes might be the fear of the unknown for some cooks. Trying something new with an long-standing, tried and true appliance can be a worrisome prospect to some and for good reason. However, trying and failing is better than not trying at all! If one recipe doesn't work for you, try the next one, and the next, until you find a grouping of recipes that will work. Always remember to write down the ones that do work, so you'll have the recipes at the ready the next time you wish to try "something new".

The beauty of the Crockpot, when it comes to cooking, is it allows whatever ingredients you are using to marinate in their flavorful juices. If your primary ingredient is a pork roast, a slow cooker helps to create a tender, tasty piece of meat. In altering recipes from cookbooks, always remember, the lid stays on during the cooking stage, therefore any recipe that requires liquids will use less, due to lack of evaporation.

Some suggestions for the Crockpot might be lasagna, linguine with clam sauce, your choice of white or red, macaroni and cheese, fish with stuffing, Swedish meatballs with gravy, adding a layer of egg noodles for good measure, or meatloaf, a staple in most households.

As most gourmet recipes call for wine, flavored vinegars, olive oil or some combination of the three, some of the liquid is provided but when in doubt add a can of flavored stewed tomatoes, liquid and all, to provide some zest to your dinner table. In addition, if you find yourself at a loss for a liquid, you can always add a cup or two of beef or chicken bouillon or broth to add some flavor to whatever it is you're cooking.

Crock-pots can be used to create a tremendous variety of Hors d'oeuvre, entrees, side dishes and desserts. With the array of sizes in which crock-pots are available, the possibilities are unlimited. Given the versatility of cooking with a Crockpot, you do not have to feel trapped with the same old, tired recipes.

Overcoming your fears and trying something new in your crock-pot will be an advantageous and delicious way to feed your family while not spending all your time in the kitchen, both before and after dinner. Try some new recipes in the crock-pot when company comes and give yourself more time to enjoy your company, which is really what entertaining is all about, isn't it?

Gourmet cooking in your crock-pot is obtainable and oh so delectable! Your family will love you for it and guests will marvel at how much time they might think you have spent preparing a delicious, "time-consuming" meal making them feel even more special!

Quinoa Recipes - Cooking Quinoa in a Crockpot

Quinoa is a versatile and delicious ingredient and, if you like to cook meals in a slow cooker, it might interest you to know that it can be cooked via this cooking method. Quinoa can be substituted for any grain in recipes although, technically, it is not a grain itself. It is the seed from a leafy plant. This ingredient is rich in iron, fiber, potassium, protein and other vitamins and minerals, hence its recent popularity. It is easy to digest too.

This ancient crop will grow in the mountains, in dry climates or in poor soil, making it an important staple in some regions. It is grown in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and in South America, although it originated in the Andes. You can get it in big grocery stores and health food stores.

Recipe for Crockpot Quinoa Stew

This hearty stew, which serves six people, is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This is a healthy yet delicious slow cooker recipe, which is idea for vegetarians and anyone who loves this delicious ingredient. You can serve it with sesame seeds or grated parmesan on top.

What you will need:

  • 2 diced potatoes

  • 2 cups brown lentils

  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste

  • 2 finely chopped cloves garlic

  • 7 1/2 cups water

  • 1/2 diced sweet potato

  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce

  • 1/2 cup quinoa

  • 2 tablespoons miso

  • 1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs

How to make it:

Rinse and drain the grains, picking out any stones. Put them in the crockpot. Add the tomato paste, herbs, potato, sweet potato, and six cups of the water. Cook for three and a half to four hours on high.

Add another cup of water halfway through the cooking time, when the stew is becoming thicker. When everything is tender, turn off the crockpot, add the soy sauce and let it sit for thirty minutes. Combine the remaining half a cup of water with the miso and stir this in the stew.

Recipe for Crockpot Chicken and Quinoa Soup with White Wine

You can use any kind of quinoa for this soup but the red variety seems to have more texture than the others do, which can go mushy. You might like to add mushrooms or celery to this recipe too.

The recipe itself is quite versatile so add anything you fancy or any vegetables that need to be used up. All the flavor comes from the chicken, vegetables, broth, and wine so use good quality ingredients.

What you will need:

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 minced onion

  • 3/4 cup white wine

  • 2 cups chicken broth

  • 1 cup rinsed and drained red quinoa

  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme

  • 2 chicken thighs or breasts

  • 3 tablespoons butter

  • 6 peeled, chopped carrots

  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to make it:

Add everything to the slow cooker and cook on high for four hours. Alternatively, you can cook it on low for eight hours. Shred the chicken and stir it into the stew before serving.

Chicken In The Crockpot Recipes

Now and then the weather gets rainy and cold and if you are looking for a warm, filling meal to make things seem cheerier, crockpot chicken recipes are the ones to pick. You can find a great variety of crockpot recipes that offer fantastic selections for many different meals, but one of the all-around favorites is chicken stew.

If you are going to be home while it is cooking, you will be willing the time to pass quickly so you can eat soon because it smells so delicious and if you will be away for a while, you will be so glad when you arrive home and the fresh aroma of homemade stew hits you as you open the door.

In the morning, the ingredients are added to the crockpot, the temperature set to LOW, and the ingredients stirred together. The lid is placed on top and everything cooks just as it supposed to do, leaving you to dish the stew in bowls. Either warm biscuits or warm bread can accompany the meal and satisfy those at the table.

You can add a lot of color and flavor to crockpot chicken stew by putting in peas, carrots, green beans, corn, and onions. Celery is another option for vegetables, as are green onion stems cut finely. Sometimes the vegetables will not be fork tender and if this happens, keep on cooking them until they are. Even though some tend to think of stew as a winter meal, it is good any time of the year. It is healthy, filling, inexpensive, and when using a crockpot recipe, easy to make.

Flavorful Crockpot Chicken Recipes

Herbs are another thing that create such an excellent taste in the chicken and vegetables. If you have friends or family coming for dinner, chicken stew is an ideal dish to serve. The fragrance will greet them when they enter the house and have them feeling hungry very quickly. You can find many quick easy appetizers recipes that will complement the dinner and perk up their appetite a bit more for dinner. Some of the herbs that might be included in the recipe you choose are thyme, rosemary, paprika, and sage. Sometimes a dash of white pepper will bring a more intense flavor to the chicken and have people guessing what the ingredient is that made it all so special.

When choosing a chicken stew recipe for your crockpot meal, be sure to pick one with ingredients that you and your family like. If someone does not care for carrots, cut the pieces of carrot large enough that you can dish up their stew with no sign of carrots. Even if you select an easy recipe, the finished flavor is always good and sometimes incredible. Herbs, vegetables, chicken, and spices, along with the broth of the cooked meal, cook well together, blending during the hours spent cooking in the crockpot.

Cooking meat and vegetables together at a low temperature allows the flavors to come out, combine, and stay delicious. In Europe, slow cooking has become recognized as one of the healthiest ways to prepare meals and many countries, such as Italy and Slovenia and in Asia, Japan, are proud to be called slow food countries, using healthy local produce and meats while creating enticing meals with recipes usually native to their country.

Celebrate with one of these delicious recipes tonight.

Crockpot Spaghetti Sauce

I love spaghetti with meat sauce. The best thing about the sauce is that the more it cooks the better it gets. I used to make spaghetti sauce only on the weekend because I would start it in the morning and then watch it simmer until early evening. Recently I came across a meat sauce recipe that combines my favorite ingredients but cooks in a crockpot.

CROCKPOT SPAGHETTI SAUCE

1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste

1 Tbsp. dried basil leaves

1 1/2 Tsp. dried oregano leaves

1 1/2 Tsp. sugar

1/2 Tsp. salt

1/4 Tsp. pepper

1/4 Tsp. crushed red pepper

Directions

In a large skillet, cook sausage, ground beef, onions, mushrooms, and garlic over medium heat for about 10 minutes or until meat is no longer pink. Stir occasionally. Drain.

Spoon sausage and beef mixture into 5 quart crockpot. Add remaining ingredients and stir to mix.

Cover and cook on low heat setting for 8 to 9 hours.

This recipe make 12 1/2 cup servings.

Quick Tips

Coat crockpot with cooking spray for easier cleanup.

Use pre-cut onions and minced garlic.

Spaghetti and meat sauce is a special meal at my house. We like to pair it with a fresh garden salad made with romaine lettuce and crunchy garden vegetables (carrots, radishes, and celery) and garlic bread. Since this recipe serves 12,  I usually take some to work the next day and share it with my staff.

Tips For Cooking Crockpot Beef Stew

When you are cooking a Crockpot beef stew, there are some important tips to keep in mind. While there are certainly a number of different recipes you can find, they all have different variances to them and the process can become very confusing. As long as you focus on these tips, you will be able to successfully create any of the different choices that you might find online.

The first tip is probably the most important. When you are making this Crockpot beef stew, it is important that you choose a fatty cut. While many people pick up lean pieces of meat, they do not offer the same flavor and the grease from these meats will end up giving your meal the depth you might find that they are normally missing.

Your next tip to keep in mind is that some vegetables should wait until later in the cooking process to be placed into the mix. The longer that these items cook, the mushier that they are going to be. Potatoes and similar vegetables are fine to put in at the start. These tend to need some extra time to cook. Carrots and celery can be added at the start if you want them to very mushy. If you wait until an hour before you serve them, you should find that they are tender and perfect.

Your third tip in the process of making a Crockpot beef stew is that using gravy mix in place of flour will add in some additional flavor. We find that this move not only deepens the flavor, but it should also help to maintain a good consistency inside of your stew. The best choice would be brown gravy mixes in this case as it is designed to help bring out the flavors of beef more than other choices.

Finally, for the perfect flavor consider adding in your spices at the start and use less than you might think. While these spices have all day to break down and mix with your stew, they will intensify. Putting in too much at the start will only result in your mixture being too spicy to eat. Here is a simple choice for a Crockpot beef stew that you can make.

Toss and Walk Beef Stew

What You Will Need

  • 1 pound stew meat

  • 4 large carrots cut

  • 1 chopped onion

  • 4 stalks chopped celery

  • 2 diced potatoes

  • 1/2 teaspoon of thyme

  • 1/2 teaspoon of oregano

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 packet of brown gravy mix

  • Salt & pepper

How to Make It

Begin by preparing and washing all your vegetables, and then place them in the Crockpot with water. Next, add in your seasonings and your gravy mix. Blend it well until it has combined. Finally, add in your stew meat and stir well. Cook on low for about 8 hours and serve warm.

How To Make A Crockpot French Dip Sandwich

A French dip sandwich is a hot sandwich made with thinly sliced roast meat, served on a baguette or French bread. It is normally served with the beef juices from the cooking process or with beef broth. This sandwich often comes with some broth or gravy on the side, although the original recipe for French dip sandwiches did not call for that.

Beef is not the only meat you can use to make this snack but it is the most popular choice. The French roll is dipped into the hot meat juices and then the sandwich is put together and served wet. It can also be double dipped. Spicy mustard is the condiment of choice with French dip sandwiches.

How This Snack Originated

There are two different restaurants in Los Angeles, California, claiming to be the birthplace of this succulent snack. One is the Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet and the other is The Original.

Both The Original and Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet have been in business since 1908 although Cole's claimed they invented the recipe in 1908 and the other restaurant gives 1918 as its birth date. Nobody knows for sure which of these restaurants invented the recipe.

Today, a lot of different diners, restaurants, and fast food chains serve this recipe. Sometimes the gravy comes on the side and sometimes the sandwich is already dipped.

Crockpot French Dip Sandwich Recipe

Slow cookers are wonderful for making recipes like this because you can cook a beef roast to perfection in there, until it is really succulent and literally falling apart. When you roast meat you run the risk of overcooking it and ending up with dried out meat but crockpot cooking is a moist cooking method so your beef is sure to remain juicy and delicious.

Put a lean beef roast in your crockpot with a can of beef consomme, a can of water, a package of Italian dressing mix and a package of au jus sauce mix. Cook on low for about nine hours. When the meat is done, it will fall apart easily. Shred the meat and pour the gravy into a serving bowl or individual gravy boats. Serve the beef on crusty rolls and dip them in the gravy.

You can serve spicy mustard with this snack if you want to and you might also like to serve a salad on the side or some kind of vegetable dish, to make it more filling. It is nice just served by itself though and you can enjoy this recipe for lunch, supper or as a meaty snack any time you fancy something hot and delicious.

Try it with the sauce on the side and try it with the sandwich already dipped. The results are slightly different although if you are making this for someone else it might be better to serve the gravy on the side so they can serve themselves and only take as much as they like.

One of the best ways to make a gravy recipe is to cook the meat in broth or liquid and then just thicken the resulting liquid up, to make a wonderful beef, chicken or turkey gravy recipe.

How to Make Pork Stew in the Crockpot

Beef might be the most commonly used stew meat in crockpot cooking but pork also comes out great. The reason why beef is used so often in crockpot recipes is that the slow cooking process can convert a cheap, tough piece of beef into a really succulent piece of steak, which is tender enough to fall apart. Chicken features in a lot of crockpot dishes too but what about pork?

The following recipe shows you how to make a wonderfully creamy, rich and satisfying stew recipe using your slow cooker. Pork and apples go together beautifully and these ingredients are combined in many different recipes so crockpot pork recipes are no exception. The garlic, nutmeg, and sage also complement the flavor of the meat and elevate the overall flavor of this dish to gourmet proportions.

You can serve this for a family dinner or even if you have guests coming over. The taste of this dish is impressive and it also looks tempting. You can leave it to cook all day and then just add the final ingredients when you get home.

Adapting the Recipe

If you prefer a thinner consistency you can leave out the cornstarch but if you are going to serve this over mashed potatoes or rice you might want to make the recipe exactly as it is, so the juices soak into the rice or potatoes well.

You can add some red pepper flakes, carrots, or celery if you want to. These would add both color and crunch to the finished dish and if you are making this for the family it is always nice to give them extra vegetables. Pork is not an expensive meat to buy and this tasty stew recipe is a wonderful way to make the most out of the meat.

What you will need:

  • 2 or 3 lbs boneless pork loin

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1/2 cup chopped onion

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

  • 3 minced cloves garlic

  • 2 peeled, cored, sliced green apples

  • 1/3 cup heavy cream

  • 1/2 cup dry white wine

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • 1/2 teaspoon crumbled dried sage

  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons cornstarch

  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour

  • Salt

How to make it:

Trim the fat off the meat and cut the meat into one inch cubes. Combine the garlic, apples, onion, sage, pepper, and sugar in the crockpot. Coat the pork cubes with the flour and add these to the apple mixture.

Pour in the wine. If you want to add some chopped fresh vegetables, such as carrot or celery, add them now. Cover the crockpot and cook the pork stew for about eight hours on low.

Whisk the cornstarch into the cream. Turn the crockpot up to high and pour the cream mixture into the stew. Cook for 20 minutes. Season the stew and serve with cornbread or cornmeal biscuits.
